THE INSPIRATION

Kate wanted to create an en suite that felt like a seamless extension of her master bedroom. Inspired by the character of Calacatta Viola marble-effect tiles and the warmth of walnut furniture, she designed a space that balances timeless elegance with a moodier, more luxurious aesthetic.

What was the biggest challenge with your old bathroom?

"The biggest challenge was that there actually wasn’t an en suite there before. I had to completely rethink the layout and knock through from the master bedroom into what used to be the kitchen area to create one. The space isn’t huge, so the focus was on making it feel considered, functional and not cramped, while still having everything I wanted, including a proper shower and vanity area."

What was your main goal for the renovation?

"My main goal was to create an en suite that felt like a natural extension of the master bedroom. I didn’t want it to feel like a separate little room that had just been added on, I wanted it to flow beautifully and feel intentional. The bedroom has small touches of the same marble, so carrying that into the en suite helped tie the two spaces together and make the whole master suite feel more elevated."

How did you decide on the design/style?

"For this space, I wanted something a little moodier and more statement than the main bathroom, but still timeless. I fell in love with the Calacatta Viola marble effect tiles because they bring so much character without needing lots of extra detail. The deep veining adds drama, but the warm tones work so beautifully with the Faber vanity unit in Walnut.

I also knew I wanted to carry through the brass finishes, especially the crosshead taps, as they instantly add that luxury, traditional feel. They’re such a beautiful detail and make the whole space feel more considered. Once I chose the marble, it really became the focal point of the en suite and everything else was designed around it."

What makes the biggest feature in your new bathroom?

"The biggest feature has to be the combination of the Calacatta Viola marble effect tiles with the Faber vanity unit in Walnut. The marble makes such a statement, especially on the floor and in the shower niche, but the walnut adds warmth and depth, which balances it perfectly.

I also love the brass crosshead taps and matching shower fittings. They bring such a luxurious, timeless feel to the room and really elevate the vanity area. It feels boutique and elegant, but still practical for everyday use, which is exactly what I wanted from a small en suite."
