A Bright, Mediterranean-Inspired Family Bathroom

Alicia from @emeraldterrace

When Alicia moved into her forever home, she inherited a bathroom that just didn't reflect her family's style. With a renovation that leant into light, natural stone and warm, Mediterranean-inspired tones, she transformed the space into a bright, luxurious retreat, without compromising on practicality.

The inspiration

"In our previous home, our bathroom was tiny and I really leant into that by using darker, moodier colours. In an evening, it was super cosy but during the day it just felt dull, so this time, I wanted to do the opposite. The biggest inspiration for me in this room was light - we’re lucky in the sense that we have a big, bright room so I really wanted to make the most of that. With that in mind, I started exploring Mediterranean themes using a mix of natural stone and calming, warm colours and then we went from there, carefully considering materials like natural stones and woods, and choosing high-end bathroom furniture that reflected the aesthetic we were going for."

What was the biggest challenge with your old bathroom?

"Honestly - all of it. We moved in and inherited a bathroom that was fine but just didn’t work for us and our family. We were lucky that the bathroom itself is a great space, the room is big and bright, but somehow the style still felt grey and dull and just not like ‘us’ at all.

This house feels like a forever home for us so we wanted to really push the boat out and create a true dream bathroom where everything was considered, comfortable - and stylish! I’m a total bath girl (you’ll find me in the bath at least five nights a week), so I knew this was a room I really wanted to invest in, and spend lots of time planning and mood-boarding so it was really perfect."

What was the brief for your renovation?

Alicia from @emeraldterrace

We wanted to create something that felt luxurious and was a little bit different but remained super functional for our growing family, including a toddler and a baby on the way

What makes the biggest difference in your new bathroom?

"Definitely the fact that every single detail has been so considered in terms of how we actually use the space and move through the room. Little things like the fact we’ve got two shower heads depending on our needs (for example, I don’t want to wash my hair every day so a rainfall shower isn’t always ideal!), or the towel hook on the inside of the shower so we can quickly and easily grab a towel without getting out.

On the bath, I’ve also added a handheld shower head. I have a toddler and another baby on the way, so needed to consider long term how we’d actually use the bath as a family so this was a must for us.

Speaking of - I’m a busy Mum and in my previous home, cleaning the bathroom was up there with the worst of the chores for me. In this room, I’ve made considered design choices to minimise cleaning time - we don’t have a glass shower screen, the freestanding bath doesn’t have feet so I don’t have to worry about cleaning awkward spaces and the basin sink is integrated (rather than on top of the basin) so it’s quick and easy to wipe down."
