Maximalist Bathrooms - 3 Looks to Love

Sometimes, more is more.

Earlier this year, minimalist powerhouse IKEA launched FOREMAL, a limited edition collection of ‘pretty, ugly, lovely’ pieces that blend contemporary design with intriguing textures, shapes and colours to create a range that is at once beautiful, unique and a touch absurd. From velvet piped jellyfish cushions, to kaleidoscopic rugs and terracotta skull pot plants, the collection is indicative of a bigger trend in interiors - maximalism.

The general consensus is that a bathroom should be a minimalist, utilitarian space. Really though, the bathroom can be as inspiring a room as any other in your home and embracing clashing colour, texture and pattern is the perfect way to achieve this.

Take inspiration from three maximalist styles created by Roper Rhodes interiors stylist Zoe Jones and start thinking about how to introduce a touch of maximalism into your bathroom design.

Be Bold with Colour

Colour, be it paint or paper, is often the first port-of-call when we start thinking about the decorating process. Feature or statement walls have been especially popular in recent years as a non-committal way of introducing bright colours into an otherwise neutral room.

Embrace the maximalist style by combining clashing colours such as pale neutrals with deep, heavily pigmented tones in the same colour family. From bedrooms to livings rooms and across paints and textiles, blush and terracotta orange is a very successful marriage of colours, creating warmth and adding interest.

Dark, moody palettes have also been popularised by the Scandi Noir trend, making them more accessible than ever. We used Farrow and Ball’s Inchyra Blue in our Scheme shoot, lifting this deep tone with our Gloss Light Grey Basin Unit and mixed mosaic tiles.

Introducing daring, stand-out colours in jewel tones like bright blue or turquoise will instantly give your bathroom a maximalist feel. Play up a statement wall with mismatched accessories in bold, clashing colours to create a look that is opulent and just a touch overdone.

Embrace Excess

When it comes to maximalism, it’s important not to completely throw out the rule book. Instead, discover new combinations, play with scale and contrast components. Fill your space with diverse design elements that add interest and beauty to every surface.

It might be the case that you’ve always liked several interior styles but could only ever opt for one - maximalism is the perfect opportunity to mix trends and textures and just generally think outside of the box.

For our System bathroom shoot, our stylist Zoe started from the ground up, with a bold, colour-block hexagonal tile in clashing greens, blues and blush pinks. Introducing a statement wall in a dramatically veined Calacatta marble elevated this already bold design to create a signature maximalist look.

Display your Wares

Maximalism tends to err on the eccentric side, so layering personal touches and found objects is a lovely way to make the look your own. Bath towels, a pattern rug or bath mat, wall art and vases are the perfect opportunity to add colour and whimsy to a bathroom.

Style a shelf with some of your favourite keepsakes in varying sizes, especially pieces in bold or clashing colours, or keep things neat and maximalist by hiding bathroom essentials away in patterned storage boxes.

Make a statement with shape by opting for a spherical or pill mirror. Our stunning Eminence mirror features a slim illuminated band that will ensure this piece stands out amid the colour and pattern of a maximalist bathroom.
